How to care for a Bonsai
  • Light:The ficus should be placed close to a sunny window. It tolerates sunshine, but dislikes draughts and should also be kept far away from the radiator which dries the air. In the winter, the ficus loses 50% of its foliage, which it renews in the summer.
  • Watering: Maintaining a bonsai means observing and understanding its needs. Remaining attentive to the slightest variations will help to keep it in good health. Learn to check the soil by scratching it a little on the top to see if the mass of the earth ball is still moist. The soil should more or less dry out between waterings. Add fertilizer mainly in the spring and autumn. Reduce the dose and stop completely in winter to allow the tree to rest.
  • Outside: The ficus is not resistant to frost and should be grown inside as soon as the average temperature drops below 15°C. In the summer, you can put your bonsai outside as long as the temperature does not drop below 15°C. This will be beneficial to the tree and make the foliage more abundant.

What are the characteristics of bonsai?

The bonsai is a dwarf tree of Japanese origin. Cultivated in pots, its cultivation is a traditional Japanese art which consists of obtaining miniature trees by using very specific techniques: pruning of the branches and roots in particular.
Bonsai are long-lived shrubs that can live for several hundred years.
There is no specific tree species to make a bonsai, it can be obtained from any species, but the 2 most popular species are the Ficus Bonsai and the Juniper Bonsai.

How to care for a Bonsai Ficus?

  • Exposition : The ficus should be placed near a sunny window. It tolerates full sun, but fears draughts and is far from a radiator, which dries out the air in a harmful way. In winter the Ficus loses 50% of its foliage, which will be renewed in summer.
  • Watering : Check the soil by scraping the top a little to feel if there is any moisture left in the root ball. The soil should dry out more or less between waterings. Fertilize bonsai mainly in spring and autumn. Reduce the amount in summer and stop in winter to allow the tree to rest.

  • Outdoor : Bonsai ficus is not frost resistant and should be grown indoors as soon as average temperatures fall below 15°C. In summer it can be taken outside as long as temperatures do not fall below 15°C, an outdoor location will be beneficial.
