How to care for a Camellia?
The camellia is a very easy shrub to grow, equally comfortable in a pot on a balcony or terrace as it is planted directly in the garden. It can be kept indoors during the flowering period, as long as a few essential rules are followed. Place it in a bright spot, near a window, a glass door or in a conservatory, ensuring the temperature stays below 17°C. Mist its foliage with room-temperature water two to three times a week. Once flowering is over, it is best to move it outdoors, either in a pot or planted in the ground.
In a pot: choose a pot of sufficient diameter with drainage holes at the bottom. Fill it with a mix of ericaceous soil and horticultural or planting compost. The camellia can stay in the same pot for 2 to 3 years but will eventually need repotting. Water regularly during hot weather, but never excessively—keep the soil moist without allowing water to stagnate around the roots.
In the ground: it thrives in sheltered spots protected from strong winds and harsh cold, whether in shade, partial shade or filtered sunlight. It does not tolerate chalky or alkaline soil, so opt for a mixture of ericaceous soil, compost and peat. Water generously after planting, then regularly throughout the first year—especially during hot spells—to encourage strong root development. Each winter, remember to protect it from the cold.
