Spring is fast approaching and with it, all the lovely flower varieties which nature offers us. Lily of the valley is a perennial plant which flowers during the spring in the undergrowth. Each stem is adorned with small bell-shaped white flowers which release a very distinctive, sweet scent.

To celebrate the new season as well as international Labour Day on 1 May (for which Lily of the valley is the symbolic flower) Aquarelle has created lily of the valley > scented bouquets

Why do we give lily of the valley on May 1st ?

The tradition of giving lily of the valley on May 1st goes back to the Renaissance period. While visiting his mother Catherine de Médicis in the Dauphiné region, King Charles 14th, was offered a strand of lily of the valley by the knight Louis de Girard of Maisonforte. He therefore decided to repeat this practice each year by offering a strand of lily of the valley to ladies of the court.

Lily of the valley was only associated with Labour Day from the beginning of the 20th century. During the 40s, the Vichy regime set up Labour Day and replaced the symbol of the red dog rose, associated with the political left, with the lily of the valley. During the 30s, sales of lily of the valley soared. In France, it has become a tradition to allow both private individuals and companies to sell lily of the valley on 1 May, without the need to obtain a licence.

Aquarelle’s Lily of the valley: the story of a family tradition

Aquarelle offers lily of the valley for 1 May, hand-picked in the traditional way by about 120 flower-picking families in the Bresse forest. Once they are carefully picked, strands of lily of the valley are assembled in Mervans, a small village near Saint-Bonnet-en-Bresse, which has been a traditional market for the plant for 60 years.

How do I replant lily of the valley ?

When you buy lily of the valley with its roots intact, you can replant it in the soil outdoors. Lily of the valley enjoys being in a shady spot. You can replant it at the foot of a tree or beside a North-facing wall. Once replanted, lily of the valley propagates rapidly, so choose a spot where it can spread. Don’t be afraid to put it in damp areas where you would like to see lily of the valley grow, to encourage its proliferation.
